Hiring Signals: The Most Underrated Buying Signal in B2B Sales
Most outbound fails on timing, not targeting. You can reach exactly the right person with exactly the right message — and still lose, because the company has no active initiative and no budget conversation happening. Hiring signals fix that.
Why hiring is the signal that matters
A job posting is a public, verifiable declaration that a company is investing in a function. It costs money to post, more money to fill, and a multiple of salary to onboard. Nobody hires into a function they are about to cut. When a company posts a role in the area you sell into, three things are almost certainly true:
Budget exists. Headcount is the most scrutinized spend in any company; if it cleared, adjacent tooling spend can too.
Initiative exists. Someone senior decided this function needs to grow — which means priorities, deadlines, and pain.
The status quo is breaking. Teams hire when the current setup stops scaling, which is exactly when they evaluate vendors.
The noise problem
Raw job-board data is dirty: staffing agencies posting for unnamed clients, aggregators recycling one listing across ten boards, ghost posts open for a year, and duplicates. A usable hiring-signal pipeline needs a legitimacy gate — is the poster the actual employer, is the post current, is it a real net-new role?
From signal to sequence
Find the owner, not the recruiter: the hiring manager or the executive over the function owns the pain the role is meant to solve.
Reference the initiative, not the job ad: "Saw you're scaling the SDR team" reads as research; "I saw your job posting" reads as scraping.
Lead with the gap: a team that is hiring is stretched today. Your product helps the new hire ramp or covers the gap until they land.
Move fast: the window between posting and filled is weeks, so signal-to-sequence should be measured in days, not sprints.
Making it systematic
The teams that win with hiring signals systematize the whole loop: continuous monitoring across their niche, automatic legitimacy filtering, contact enrichment on the decision-makers, and a multichannel sequence that references the live initiative.
